facial recognition
those who've known me for any length of time will know that i have a fascination with cars. i really like driving, looking at cars, reading about cars, talking about cars, etc. which is ironic since we chose to come to a place where having a car is not very practical (or necessary). don't worry - i have a driver's license here just in case the urge hits. :)
one popular feature on cars here is the ability to fold back the side mirrors after parking. this is because hong kong island is limited on space, and parking spaces and even streets and driving lanes are extremely narrow. it almost makes one claustrophobic!

so whenever i see cars looking like this, i smile. it reminds me of a person with folded back ears. if you think i'm crazy, check out this article in the wall street journal which talks about "car faces".

here's an excerpt:
There's nothing accidental about seeing faces in car grilles. In fact, carmakers say they're tapping into a hard-wired human trait. Babies can discern the features of a face practically from birth, developmental psychologists say, and recognize faces even in inanimate objects arranged in the pattern of eyes and mouth. In today's hypercompetitive car market, designers are focusing on faces as part of a broader effort to design cars that appeal to buyers -- tapping psychologists, anthropologists and other experts in human behavior, and even monitoring the brain waves of focus-group participants.

This is interesting. I guess we all subconsciously do it. And I guess that's why you can call a car "sexy"?
since i was little, i always wondered why i could see faces on everything, especially cars. who knew they were doing it on purpose?? or maybe even before it became a marketing ploy, perhaps designers were letting loose the subconscious happy faces trapped in their minds :) :)
holla at me
